My Word for the Year is Courage

Dec 18, 2024 | Thought Leadership

Awareness is a starting point, but true growth demands courage—courage to confront our own limitations, to surround ourselves with people and ideas that challenge us, and to venture beyond our comfort zones. While many of us settle for “good” and aspire to self-awareness, we risk becoming self-absorbed if we don’t take bold action. As Jim Collins argues in Good to Great, pushing past mediocrity requires honesty about our blind spots and the willingness to learn.

Friction, uncertainty, and even discomfort can sharpen and humble us, cultivating the humility needed to grow. Embracing new ideas, exposing ourselves to diverse perspectives, and acknowledging how incomplete our awareness really is are key steps. Frameworks like the Change Curve, the Stockdale Paradox, and Self-Determination Theory emphasize resilience, autonomy, and optimism in the face of challenges. Likewise, “brave leadership” reminds us that every choice we make influences others—and that in volatile times, retreating out of fear prevents us from creating positive change.

Ultimately, the most profound lessons come from our own lived experiences and the commitment to keep learning. By carving out time for reflection and maintaining rituals that sustain energy and awareness, we can step forward with courage, forging a life of purpose and bold action.
